Sean Young

Sean Young (born Mary Sean Young; November 20, 1959, Louisville, Kentucky) is an American actress whose career spans more than four decades of film, television, and stage work. Trained in dance at the Interlochen Arts Academy and the School of American Ballet, she worked as a model before turning to acting, making her film debut in James Ivory’s Jane Austen in Manhattan (1980) and reaching a wide audience opposite Bill Murray in Ivan Reitman’s Stripes (1981).

Her defining role came in 1982 as Rachael, the enigmatic replicant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner — now regarded as one of the most iconic characters in science-fiction cinema. A run of high-profile studio films followed through the 1980s and early 1990s: David Lynch’s Dune (1984) as Chani, the hit thriller No Way Out (1987) opposite Kevin Costner, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street (1987), The Boost (1988), Cousins (1989), and the dual lead roles of A Kiss Before Dying (1991). Her comedic work includes Fatal Instinct (1993), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), and Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde (1995).

Since the 2000s she has worked steadily in independent film and television, including the acclaimed Western Bone Tomahawk (2015), TNT’s The Alienist (2018), and a recurring role on CBS’s The Young and the Restless. In 2017 Rachael returned to the screen in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, with Young serving as acting coach for the recreation of her character. In 2014 the Oldenburg International Film Festival honored her with a star on its Walk of Fame, and in 2023 she made her Off-Broadway debut in Ode to the Wasp Woman. She continues to appear in independent features today.
